GPS Google Maps is testing a new feature that will indicate the presence of lighting to provide safer night routes for pedestrians

Google is currently testing a new feature on its Google Maps geolocation and guidance service. This new feature is particularly suitable for pedestrians following a night route. The idea is to propose safer routes by indicating which streets benefit or not from public lighting.

Illuminated streets will be marked on the Google Maps with a yellow line. Pedestrians will be able to choose whether or not to follow a path depending on the presence of streetlights on the indicated route.

A feature still being tested

Spotted by XDA-Developers, the option is not yet available on the application. It is difficult to know when the functionality will be offered to the public, through a beta or not.

It is conceivable that Google could include a collaborative dimension so that users can indicate which streetlights are on or off. Some cities or municipalities prefer not to illuminate certain areas despite the presence of street lighting in order to save money.
